Thursday, January 12, 2017 – Graupel?, Coleus Cuttings all Day,
Interesting Names Again
What a difference a day
makes. Yesterday we were in the 40’s again but this morning we woke up to 21
degrees and a layer of snow. . . no wait, this isn’t snow. This hard round
frozen stuff looks like little pellets about the size of BB’s.
I’m pretty sure the precipitation we got overnight isn’t hail, snow or sleet. I think it’s called “Graupel” This uncommon form of precipitation is soft hail or snow pellets, it is formed when super-cooled droplets of water are collected and freeze on falling snowflakes, forming little balls of ice.
We worked in the
greenhouse all day again like yesterday. We continued our project of preparing
cutting of Coleus plants for rooting. It looks like we’ll still be doing this
tomorrow and maybe the next day.
And once again we found
very interesting names for the various strains of Coleus plants. Some of these
made us chuckle as we worked. Names like: Tickle Me, Boutique Fetish, Holy
Guacamole, Trailer Park Princess, Bomb Shell, Volcano, Havoc, Blackberry
Waffles, Radical Butter Bean, Say Cheese, and Ring Leader. Then the names seamed to move to the dark
side with names like: Lord Voldemort, Red
Witch, Psycholeus, Bipolar Biology, Satanic Embers and Sin.
