July 04, 2017 – Independence Day, Cleaning the Residence, Cow Rescue
This morning the mission
had a flag raising ceremony at the Visitor’s Center flag pole. Elder Cook gave
a moving and powerful talk on patriotism, military service and the sacrifice of
those who have fought and died to preserve our freedom and protect our nation.
Next President Hall added his comments about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how
its restoration could have only happened here in this free land that God
prepared for just that purpose. This
country, its constitution and its inspired leaders are all part of our Heavenly
Father’s plan to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all the nations of the
world. It was a very good flag raising this Independence Day morning.
At FM this morning our only assignment was to water
everything, water the greenhouses, the plants on the outdoor benches and the
gardens and decorative flower pots. Elder Cantwell and I watered everything at
the FM compound. Elder Kyle Johnson is
under the weather this morning so he stayed home to recuperate. Elder Coleman
and Elder Gearheart took the watering truck and watered the flower pots and
flowerbeds on Old Main Street, at the Visitor’s Center and on Mulholland Street
in downtown Nauvoo.

The rest of the morning we cleaned the yard and
flowerbeds at Elder Cantwell and Elder Kyle Johnson’s apartment. It was a very
big job, the flower beds haven’t been cleaned in a long while.
Elder Coleman and Elder McRae are the other two
Elders that live there. Elder McRae works with the Teamsters and put in a full
day with them. When Elder Coleman finished his watering assignment he also
helped us clean the flowerbeds.
Back at our home a
jogger noticed a cow stuck in the mud in the pond in front of our house. The
lady jogger found me and I was able to get word to the rancher that leases the
land and owns the herd of cattle. The cow was bloated, laying on her side and
struggling to breath and just barely able to keep her nose out of the water. In
that terrible condition the cow was about to die. The rancher came out with his
big tractor and a chain and was able to pull the cow out of the mud and save
her life.
The cow may have already
been sick or in distress of some kind before she got stuck in the mud. After
the rancher got her out of the pond he cleaned the mud out the cow’s nose and
mouth, gave her a shot of antibiotics and took her back to his barn.
