Tuesday, October 5, 2016 – Potting Coleus Plants, Elder Aina Power
Washing, Rendezvous Costumes
Sis. Johnson and I
spent most of our morning working in the greenhouse. First we transplanted
little Coleus rooted cuttings from their small one inch starter pots to a much
larger 3 inch pot. There are hundreds of different varieties of Coleus plants
and Richard, FM’s Horticulturalist, has stock plants in most of those bright,
beautiful colors. He uses the stock plants to get cuttings for next year’s
plants. We enjoyed this year’s crop all summer in the flowerbeds and in the
planters around Nauvoo & Carthage. Transplanting all of those Coleus’
plants isn’t hard work but we did spend several hours at it.
Next we treated all of
the newly transplanted Coleus plants with a systemic insecticide to protect
them against aphids, mealy bugs, white fly, etc. If it weren’t for this
treatment, the FM greenhouses would be a vast breeding haven for all kinds of
plant pests.
We also added fertilizer
to each pot to give all of the little plants a good boost on their way to being
next spring’s “eye popping” bedding plants.
Our last assignment for
the day was to work on the flower beds at the Sarah Granger Kimball home. They
all need serious cleaning, pruning and weeding. We didn’t finish before quitting
time so we will go at it again tomorrow.
This evening we
performed in “Rendezvous in Old Nauvoo.” During the pre-show rehearsal Sis. Van
Horn brought in several bolts of fabric, women’s costume dresses, capes and
bonnets. She and Sister Lowe (our Rendezvous director) along with Sis. Johnson
and Sis. Burningham where trying to coordinate color combinations of new
dresses and accessories. Sis. Johnson
really needs a new performance dress. She has lost so much weight that the
dress she uses now is baggy on her. It’s already been taken in once and can’t
be taken in anymore.
Sis. Johnson and I have
been asked to take the parts of “George & Agatha” in Rendezvous in Old
Nauvoo. We are really looking forward to the challenge. We just got a copy of the script and we have
about a month to memorize, rehears and prepare before we start performing the
part.
