Thursday, October 20, 2016 – Family Living Center, Nauvoo Conservation,
Elder Hacking & BYU Football
Our whole work day
consisted of cleaning the grounds around the “Family Living Center.” Sis.
Johnson and I dug, weeded, pulled, pruned, raked and hauled. It was windy and
cold, quite a contrast to last Monday when it was in the 90’s. Today it was in
the 50’s but with the wind if felt colder than that.
After lunch we talked to
Elder Walker and he invited us to the second story “Conservation & Artifact”
room. Elder Walker works at FM like we do but in his free time he volunteers to
work in the “Conservation & Artifact” room.
Elder Walker worked in
Nauvoo as a student of Archeology in 1968. Back then the restoration of Old
Nauvoo was just getting started and he was involved from the beginning. Back in
the early days of the restoration of Nauvoo they didn’t know how to preserve
the artifacts like they do today. Elder Walker’s task today is to remove all of
the old artifacts from their old storage containers and put them in new “Acid
Free” and airtight, baggies and boxes. He spends most of his time on the
computer categorizing and cataloging everything in storage. It is a huge
undertaking but Elder Walker thinks it will finally be done in a few months.
The upstairs room we
were in was full of artifacts, one of a kind treasures, relics and construction
materials from the 1840’s in Old Nauvoo. He showed us three boxes full of Red
Nauvoo bricks that had been laced together in a “herringbone pattern” on the
floor of the original Nauvoo Temple baptistery. He pulled one out and let me
hold it. He said, it’s awe inspiring to think that Prophets of God walked on
this very brick. You can say that again! Everything in the room was “Awe
Inspiring.”
Last Tuesday evening
when Sis. Johnson and I met with Elder & Sis. Hacking, Elder Hacking
commented to me that he really missed watching BYU football since he’s been on
a mission. I invited him to come over to
our house to watch the game live on line. He didn’t hesitate to take me up on
the offer.
