October 24, 2017 – Durell Nelson, 300 Bows, Wind & Downed Limbs, New Grove,
Mulching VC Tulip beds, Deep Cleaning our home
Yesterday, Elder Kyle Johnson and Elder Cantwell
went to Quincy ILL to bring back about 150 more pumpkins for this weekend’s
“Boo-tiful Nauvoo” festivities and parade. Today those pumpkins are being
prepared for carving. Durell Nelson, long time resident of Nauvoo and counselor
in the Nauvoo Temple Presidency, is drawing the images that will be carved in
to each pumpkin. It’s a huge task but he’s done it every year there has been a
“Boo-tiful Nauvoo” community event.
While it was very cold and windy outside, Sis.
Johnson along with the other ladies on the grounds crew, worked in the
propagation room making bows for all of the Christmas decorations for the
wreaths and garlands that will go up in November all over Old Nauvoo. The ladies worked most of the day and
finished all of the big beautiful red velvet bows Richard will need, almost 300
of them. One of Sis. Johnson’s goals before she leaves for home was to finish
all of the bows. Good work ladies, the bows are all done and they look great.
Elder Kyle Johnson, Elder Cantwell and I worked
outdoors all day and did a number of projects. The biggest job was planting a
large number of perennial plants all over the “New Grove” just west of the
Nauvoo Temple. It was a very windy and cold day. The wind seemed to cut right
through us like a knife. We had to put on warmer coats, gloves, etc. to
withstand the cold and wind.
Our final project after lunch was to put “Shredded
Bark Mulch” all over the four entry Tulip flowerbeds at the Visitor’s Center.
Tulip beds don’t usually get mulch but these four flowerbeds are right next to the
entrances to the Visitor’s Center and they are in the highest foot traffic
areas in Old Nauvoo. The mulch helps them look their best for all of the
visitors that enter the Visitor’s Center.
