Tuesday, July 19, 2016 – Cleaning & Ants, Return Bedding, “Sunset” Cancelled, Rain

All morning it was work as usual. Sis. Johnson cleaned the planters along the sidewalks of the Visitor’s Center. She’s had to slide them out of their spots because the roots of the plants are finding their way down through the drain holes and are anchoring themselves through the spaces between the bricks that make the sidewalk. If left too long the roots would be so big and strong they might destroy the sidewalk by the end of summer. That wouldn’t be good.
One of the planters Sis. Johnson moved had a surprise under it, there was a huge black ant bed. I’ve been killing ants all spring and summer. They are a terrible nuisance. Sis. Johnson said they all grabbed larvae and headed for their tunnels below. She did a tap dance on top of them and few made it out alive. But to finish the whole nest off, she got the ant poison and soaked the whole area. Add exterminator to the list of Sis. Johnson’s duties.

This afternoon we headed for Nauvoo early before our performance in “Sunset by the Mississippi.” First, Sis. Johnson had an appointment at the beauty salon. Next we went over to the offices of FM (Facilities Maintenance) to return all of the bedding & linens we borrowed. While Adam & Ruth were staying with us we were able to check out extra blankets, sheets, pillows, foam mats and even towels & wash cloths. FM makes all of this bedding & linen available to all of the Seniors that have family visit.
The mission encourages all of the Seniors to invite family to visit and participate in all of the tour, shows, pageants, fairs, etc. that Nauvoo & Carthage have to offer. Having bedding & linens available is just one way the Mission helps out when families visit. It is really helpful. Fortunately Sis. Johnson and I live in a house with an extra bedroom so we were able to accommodate the Gurr’s. However not all of the Senior Couples have an extra room. Sis. Johnson & I were very fortunate to be assigned a home with an extra bedroom.
When Sis. Johnson and I left for Nauvoo this afternoon it was sprinkling in Carthage. By the time we got to Nauvoo it was a steady rain with no sign of letting up. Normally if it is raining, our show “Sunset by the Mississippi” is moved indoors to the theater in the visitor’s center. But, for some reason tonight’s show was cancelled. That’s a first. We were disappointed; we enjoy performing in “Sunset by the Mississippi.” Other Seniors were disappointed too because they have family in town and they planned their visit to coincide with their performance in “Sunset by the Mississippi.”
