August 19, 2017 – James T Kirk Birthplace, Kalona, Amish, Skype Ernie and
William & James
For P-day Sis. Johnson and I took a road trip an
hour and a half north of Nauvoo to an Amish and Mennonite community named
Kalona, IA. It is famous for its Historic Village & Museum, bakeries, creamery,
handcrafted gifts and furniture.
We were in for an
unexpected surprise on our drive to Kalona. While driving through the little
Iowa town of Riverside we discovered this is the “Future Birthplace” of Captain
James T Kirk of Star Trek fame. We didn’t have time to stop and tour the museum
or go into James T Kirk’s future childhood home but the whole town was decked
out in Star Trek images and memorabilia. Who knew we would be driving through
the “Future Birthplace” of James T Kirk, it was one of the highlights of our
road trip!
This evening we enjoyed
a video call (Skype) from our son Ernie and our grandsons William and James in
Australia. We do this video chat every Saturday evening usually at 8:00pm. It
works out perfectly for Ernie and his family because it is 9:00am Sunday
morning in Australia. We do this video chat every week if possible and we’ve
been doing ever since they moved to Australia three years ago. We love the
miracle of modern communications and the way we can stay so close to loved ones that live so far away.
