Friday, September 9, 2016 –The Allyn House Windows
We have a souvenir and
gift shop in Nauvoo Sis. Johnson likes to go to named The Allyn House. Its real
name is Allyn Historic Sash Co.(AHSC). Charles Allen, owner of AHSC , has been
making sash, doors, and other items for restoration and historic re-creation
projects in Nauvoo and elsewhere since 1975. The uniqueness of his work is
centered in using authentic mortise and tenon, square-peg joinery. You don’t
see that very much these days. That’s why he was selected to do all of the
windows and exterior doors in the reconstruction of the Nauvoo Temple, he is that
good!
In 1999, Charles Allen,
was asked to design, build, finish, and install 134 windows and 7 front doors
for the rebuilding of the historic Nauvoo Temple. The project took three years
to complete and the Temple was dedicated in June 2002. To give his restoration
windows the authentic look so they are indistinguishable from the original
1840’s glass, he uses European mouth-blown cylinder glass. This is how glass
panes were made in the 1840’s. Next time you look at the Nauvoo temple, look
closely at all of the beautiful windows and doors. Charles Allen’s work is magnificent
and spot on authentic.
