Thursday, July 14, 2016 – Adam & Ruth Gurr, Baptisms for the Dead,
Brick Yard, Country Fair, Nauvoo Pageant.
While Sis. Johnson and I
were doing our chores on the visitor’s center grounds, Ruth & Adam and
family took the tour of the Carthage Jail. Then, they were off to Nauvoo to
visit the visitor’s center and plan the rest of their four days here and then
watch the video that tell the story of Nauvoo.
Sis. Johnson and I
caught up with Ruth & Adam and family at the Nauvoo temple at 1:30 for
their two o’clock appointment to do Baptisms for the Dead. Sis. Johnson and I
got to watch as the Gurr kids were baptized for the dead by their father and I
got to assist in the confirmations. Ruth
has been very busy doing genealogy work and has brought a lot of family names
with her to the Temple. Ruth has
seriously caught the “Spirit of Elijah.”
Next we were off to the
historic Nauvoo Brick Yard were the Gurr kids got a special treat. After the
tour was over everyone was given a commemorative genuine Nauvoo brick. The
three Gurr children, Sarah, Eliza and Caleb got something more. Their bricks
were personalized with their names, a special gift from Sis. Johnson and I.
The pageant is filled
with authentic hymns and folk songs, lively dances and tender moments that
share the joy these early Saints found in living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
All of the words of the pageant were taken from journals, sermons, and historic
records of those early Saints. The whole show invites each of us to feel the
powerful testimonies of these early faithful members of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I can’t say enough about
how good the Pageant was. The staging, props and special effects were
outstanding. I do think I will have to
watch it several more times to completely grasp everything it had to offer.
